Backyard Drawing
Colored Pencil on Drawing paper
45 cm x 30.5 cm
The backyard used in this piece was taken from a photo of my own, and I took a photo of my great mothers backyard. For this work, I wanted to apply Theory of Knowledge concepts and focused on sense perception in the arts. I remember a presentation on the arts and how two movements can convey a certain message of beauty. So I wanted to capture a moment of time like many impressionist such as Graham Grecken, and create a visual representation of my take on the scene. I can tie this into my theme of complexity if put next to my other works such as the brain x-ray piece and say that making something beautiful is the product of a complex mind.
I started to draw another leaf for my work and realized that I could make a faster sketch by using quick lines and capturing the color at the time it was drawn. I focused on the contrast of the leaf veins versus the rest of the leaf, and wanted to add the specific parts of the leaf that were uncolored from the rest of the leaf. By this I mean that I went from brown to green. This sketch also is obscure, and meant to seen as a leaf, but as the artist view of the leaf. Also connecting back to what I learned sophomore year about impressionism, many artist used quicker brush strokes in order to capture the moment in time, and used their own technique on it.

I wanted to connect one of my IB classes to an artwork for my final work, so I decided to connect TOK and art, since an area of knowledge is the arts, it would fit perfectly. The first movement that came to mind when it comes to the arts and sense perception and how someone visually represents a scene was impressionism. The use of nature and capturing color would work hand in hand with the area of knowledge and sense perception. I started off with collecting leaves and sketching what I saw. I used color and detail and tried to pay attention to detail with the orange and brown leaf. Although not fully detailed, I wanted to put down the places on the leaf that are eye popping and put emphasis on these parts by using darker tones.

I took the picture of the backyard, and I decided that I should try to work on the tree trunk of the tree. Although not large, the texture on a tree is very rough. So if I decided to use a more detailed form of impressionism for my final work, I should probably work on how to sketch/draw tree bark. I went outside and simply went by a tree, and used the hues and shades that I saw and used it the best I could in my sketch. The sketch shows the indents within the tree, but does not show the true texture. This was a struggle because the bark is full of small detail that need to be drawn, otherwise the tree will not look like a true tree. Also for this sketch, I did not use the quick line technique like I used in the previous sketches. I will most likely use a quick line technique to quickly capture the moment I want to represent.
