Jaw Bone
Pencil and chalk pastel on paper
The jawbone in this piece is inspired by the Leonardo da Vinci sketches. I used the paper from my freshman year as a reference to the human body sketches and the mechanisms da Vinci used. Since I focused on decay in my zombified self-portrait, the pencil drawing does show the decay and remembrance I want to display. I wanted to make a ground that can be a resting place for the jawbone, and it is in white to contrast from the black sky. It helps the pencil on the jawbone be emphasized.
Since my interest in the human anatomy is still strong, I decided to focus on the human skull. Instead of the actual skull, I was drawing a jawbone with more emphasis. I thought to myself that no one really draws a jawbone, so I decided to take an initiative. I'm using the da Vinci sketches of the human body as an inspiration. I wanted to make my sketches somewhat hazy like the da Vinci sketches. I remember writing a essay on da Vinci freshman year, so I also wanted to incorporate mechanisms in some ways. I decided to draw that on my jawbone sketch. I also drew in the rest of the skull to fill in somewhat so the sketch did not seem so incomplete.

After drawing my jawbone sketch, I figured that teeth would be another good thing to sketch. I found some odd looking teeth, and decided to draw them, trying to focus on the shading and focus on the contrast between the darker shading and lighter shades. I tried to stay in the same drawing technique as the previous sketch, but I did not use charcoal on these. I used a B drawing pencil. As long as I'm able to make indents distinguished from the rest of the teeth. Although I do not think the teeth will be a main focus in my final work that I will start soon, it still is good to get a feel on how bones have curves that need to be paid attention to.

I wanted to focus on da Vinci's mechanisms too, so I decided to draw a jerry-rigged machine too. Since jawbones were my focus and move only up and down, I wanted to make a wheel with a bar that would show how the jawbone would be connected to the wheel. Then the board with the tongue on it, that is a representation of the jawbone itself. I used heavy lines to have an emphasis on the mechanism itself. I wanted to show some movement with, but I do not think I was very successful.
